Front page story:

On Thursday, Dec. 3, the body of a homeless man, known to locals as "Mole," was found in a District X park. Details are unknown at this time. The witness who discovered the body described it as "torn apart by animals." Little is known about the victim, except he was a regular sight on the streets around the park.

The NYPD are investigating, but have already described the victim as "another homeless John Doe.”

(With the article is a picture of where the body was found. The crime scene tape has already been taken down and people are walking around, business as usual)

The second story on the front page is a story about a cat-like mutant in District X who runs a shelter for stray cats. Jumps to page 4

Another day, another crime against a mutant. Another call to inaction from the NYPD.

On Thursday, Dec. 3, the body of a homeless man was found in a park. As if that wasn’t enough reason for the police to write him off, he was also a physical mutant, said to have mole-like features. This has cemented the young man’s place in the NYPD’s cold case room. They say they’re investigating, of course - keeping up appearances. But we all know how this is going to end.

It’ll end the same way the mutant beating by police back in July ended. It’ll end the same way it ends for every visible mutant who’s harassed on the street every single day for having pointed ears or fur or green skin.

It won’t go anywhere.

The NYPD isn’t protecting mutants.

It wouldn’t be fair, of course, to say that all cops hate mutants. But it’s been made perfectly clear that even the ones who might care are going to be consistently impeded by the ones who don’t.

Which means we have to help each other. There’s enough humans and police against mutants without us turning on each other as well. If there’s someone who wants to help - if there’s someone who wants to try and get justice for the mutants who are being ignored by the NYPD - then let them. Someone needs to stick up for the mutants, and if we can’t get help outside the circle then we have to tighten it.

This isn’t a call to arms. We’re not fighting - we’re defending ourselves, and we’re helping each other until such a time when the NYPD sees fit to consider mutant-related crimes as serious and demanding of attention as human crimes. Until dead mutants in parks are more than just “John Does.” Until we’re considered equal.

Hopefully we won’t have to wait forever for that time to come.
