AP - The Kenyan government announced today that for the immediate future, access to the Marsabit National Park including Mount Marsabit itself has been suspended due to unspecified safety concerns. The government declined to provide any further information beyond detailing that the area would be temporarily under the jurisdiction of the Kenya Defense Forces and directed all further inquiries to KDF officials. All flights out of the Marsabit airport have been suspended and highway access is currently blocked. Attempts to reach citizens inside the city have failed, which the KDF attributes to a loss of cellular and internet access as a side effect of the "safety concerns". Marsabit National Reserve, a noted bird sanctuary as well as unique long tusked elephants, is a popular destination, attracting tens of thousands of visitors annually to the small city.
